HUMAN RIGHTS CODE AMENDMENT ACT, 2021

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, enacts as follows:

SECTION 1: [Human Rights Code, section 1] adds a definition of "Indigenous".

1 Section 1 of the Human Rights Code, R.S.B.C. 1996, c. 210, is amended by adding the following definition:

"Indigenous" , in relation to a person, means Indigenous within the meaning of "Indigenous peoples" as defined in the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act; .

SECTION 2: [Human Rights Code, sections 7 to 11, 13, 14, 41 and 42] adds "Indigenous identity" to the list of protected grounds.

2 Sections 7 (1), 8 (1), 9, 10 (1), 11, 13 (1), 14, 41 (1) and 42 (1) (a) are amended by adding " Indigenous identity, " before " race ".

Commencement

3 This Act comes into force on the date of Royal Assent.
